Frequently asked questions about OCA

What is the hashkafa of OCA?

OCA is a Torah-driven Orthodox Jewish Day School grounded in the belief of the inherent kedusha of all learning. This core hashkafa inspires our commitment to excellence in both Judaic and general studies.

Through the thoughtful integration of general studies within a Torah framework, we prepare our students to navigate today's world while living lives of meaningful religious observance.

By fostering a deep love of Torah and a passion for lifelong learning, we strive to educate confident, capable individuals who contribute positively to the world around them - guided always by Torah, mitzvot, and refined middot.

What makes OCA special or unique?

We view Torah learning and general studies as complementary and interconnected paths of exploration and growth.

We celebrate the unique strengths and qualities of each student, intentionally nurturing their academic, social, and emotional development to help them reach their fullest potential.

We integrate hands-on, experiential learning that actively engages students and deepens their understanding.

We emphasize middot as the foundation of a caring, respectful school culture, fostering kindness and a strong sense of community among students and faculty.

Our connection to Am Yisrael, Eretz Yisrael, and Medinat Yisrael is a core value that shapes our identity and educational mission.

What is OCA's position on single gender versus co-ed classes?

We are committed to suitable learning opportunities for all of our students to experience, learn, and achieve their maximum potential. Respectful interactions between boys and girls are taught and expected at all times.

In the ECC and Elementary School, mixed classes support the development of healthy social skills. Classes are formed to create balanced communities in which students of different levels and strengths are encouraged to learn with and from one another.

OCA maintains separate classes for all subject areas starting in 5th grade, and in all Middle School classes except for mathematics and Ivrit in which students are grouped by level.

In Middle School, boys and girls are also separated for social, informal times, including lunch and breaks, with the exception of leveled courses such as Math and Ivrit.

Where do students from the 8th grade graduating class attend high school?

Preparing for high school is a long-term growth process that becomes an important focus of the eighth grade year. We are proud that our graduates attend a wide variety of high schools and colleges according to their and their family's interests and goals.

OCA graduates attend a variety of high schools including Bais Yaakov of Baltimore, Berman Hebrew Academy, Beth Tfiloh, Yeshiva of Greater Washington, Yeshivas Mekor Chaim (YMC), Ner Israel, Toras Chaim, MTA, Israel, and more.

Our Middle School team works with the student and parents through the application process.

What extended day/extracurricular options does Ohr Chadash provide?

In the ECC, we offer an extended after-care program, Stay and Play, from either 3:30-4:30pm or 3:30-5:30pm, 4 days each week.

In the Elementary School, students may sign up for Homework Hour or a variety of after-school chugim such as art, science, sports, dance, and more. The ES offerings change each quarter so students have an opportunity to choose from a variety of extracurricular activities.

How does OCA support those with varying learning needs?

Teachers use a differentiated learning model in the classroom for varying levels of student ability.

A staff special educator joins the classroom to support students during class instruction time and also pulls students out to provide small group instructions in Math, Kriah, and Reading.

We partner with Shemesh for other support services where needed.

Does OCA provide tuition assistance?

A small, confidential committee reviews all applications for tuition assistance and assistance is awarded on a needs basis. Please contact Rachel Lasson in our Finance office to help walk you through your Financial Aid application.
