Growing as independent learners
First Grade is an exciting year of growth as students transition from learning foundational skills to applying them with increasing confidence and independence.
Our nurturing classrooms balance high academic expectations with individualized support while intentionally helping students develop confidence, resilience, and a growth mindset. First graders quickly learn that mistakes are not something to fear; they are opportunities to learn. Throughout the year, students embrace classroom mantras such as "I made a mistake. It's okay!" and "I can do hard things!" These daily reminders encourage perseverance, self-advocacy, and the confidence to tackle new challenges with optimism and determination.
Judaic studies
First Grade marks many significant milestones in a child's Jewish education. As students become increasingly fluent Hebrew readers, they also begin to develop a deeper understanding of tefillah, Torah, and mitzvot, creating meaningful connections that will remain with them for years to come.
Using the Kriability curriculum, students strengthen Hebrew decoding and encoding skills while building reading fluency and accuracy. They expand their understanding of syllables, prefixes, suffixes, and Hebrew word roots (shorashim) while mastering Hebrew script writing. These skills provide the strong linguistic foundation necessary for future Chumash learning.
Daily tefillah becomes increasingly meaningful through the Ani Tefillah approach, which encourages students to stop, think, and appreciate the words they are saying. Rather than simply memorizing the prayers, children begin exploring the purpose and meaning of tefillah, learning about Hachana L'Tefillah, Modeh Ani, Birkat HaShachar, and the significance of saying Baruch Atah. First graders also celebrate their Mesibat Siddur, where every student proudly receives his or her first Siddur and celebrates this milestone with their family, classmates, and teachers.
Throughout the year, Parsha and Chagim come alive through storytelling, projects, songs, interactive activities, and hands-on experiences. Students build upon their Kindergarten knowledge by expanding their understanding of each holiday's mitzvot, customs, vocabulary, and historical significance. Classroom experiences such as a simulated Bedikat Chametz and interactive Seder activities help children connect classroom learning with family celebrations. Ivrit instruction continues through iTalAm as students strengthen their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while learning to communicate confidently in modern Hebrew.
General studies
First Grade students continue building strong academic foundations through engaging, research-based instruction that encourages curiosity, collaboration, and critical thinking. Teachers differentiate instruction to meet students where they are while challenging every child to grow.
Using the ReadBright literacy curriculum, students become increasingly confident readers as they strengthen phonics, decoding, vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and written expression. Handwriting Without Tears further develops clear handwriting and organized writing skills.
Through Reveal Math, students will explore addition and subtraction, place value, measurement, geometry, and representing and comparing numbers. The curriculum provides meaningful opportunities for students to deepen their mathematical understanding through visual models, hands-on exploration, problem solving, and mathematical discourse, encouraging students to explain not only what they did, but why it works.
Mystery Science encourages investigation through the study of animal and plant traits, patterns in the day and night sky, light, sound, and communication, while Social Studies introduces continents, citizenship, and American holidays through engaging project-based learning. Art, computers, music, and physical education round out the curriculum, helping students develop creativity, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.
